Do You Know How To Choose A Childcare Centre?

Every parent wants to be involved in the life of their child, but that doesn't mean being with them all day, every day. Many parents will want to be available for their child for those precious early months and years, but often there comes a time when they need to return to work. Maybe they miss the intellectual stimulation of a working environment, or perhaps it is a financial necessity that drives a parent to return to full-time paid employment. Whatever the reason for returning to work, deciding how to care for your children while you are working can be a challenge.

Do you need a childcare centre?

One of the most practical childcare solutions is a professionally managed childcare centre, but choosing the best childcare centre can be tricky if you haven't thought about what you need from your childcare provider. There are two areas of concern that will direct your choice of child care centre, there will be practical concerns about fitting the child care into your life, and then there will be concerns about what happens to your child while they are separated from you and with the child care provider.

Looking for a child care centre

Practical issues - You could look for the child care centre closest to your home, but that may not be the best fit for your family. Think about who will be responsible for dropping off and collecting the child each day. Consider where the child care centre is in relation to your journey to work. Do you want to add thirty minutes extra travel time to your day, or is there another child care centre that you pass on the journey to work, even if it is farther from your home? Another practical concern for many parents is the level of fees charged by the child care centre. Before enrolling your child, always obtain a list of all the charges so that there will be no unpleasant surprises when the bills arrive. Finally, you must ensure that the centre will be open whenever you need it. Can you be sure that you won't be stuck waiting for the centre to open or have to rush from work early to meet the evening collection deadline?

Educational content - Choosing a child care centre can't only be about how easy the centre is to access. As a responsible parent,  you must consider the curriculum the centre will follow and whether they have the required staffing levels to achieve their stated goals. It is always a good idea to visit the centre in advance and observe how well the staff interact with the children. Look at how settled the children are and whether they appear to benefit from what they are learning day by day.
